Programs, Initiatives & Events

Donations from foundations, businesses, and individuals are used to benefit the children within the Goleta Union School District.

MUSIC & PERFORMING ARTS

The benefits of arts instruction are both academic and social-emotional, including the development of mental health skills such as empathy, self-awareness, and self-management.

EDUCATOR GRANTS

Innovation Grants support GUSD educators who are pioneers in teaching. The Professional Development Scholarship fund allows teachers to pursue opportunities to further their own education and stay up-to-date with best practices and emerging academic research. Teachers, principals, paraeducators, and any other school staff can apply.

LEMON RUN

The Lemon Run celebrates the Goleta Valley community while raising funds for our Educator Grants. Mark your calendars for September 20, 2026!

LITERACY AND DUAL LANGUAGE IMMERSION

The goal of the literacy initiative is to lift students’ reading ability and proficiency, which will have a far-reaching impact on their ability to succeed in school and in life.

MENTAL HEALTH

GUSD has partnered with Family Service Agency to embed a mental health specialist in after-school programs at its three highest-need schools, providing trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, and wraparound support to overcome the barriers that prevent low-income and English-learning students from accessing timely mental health services.

STEAM EDUCATION

The integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math offers engaging, hands-on learning opportunities for students. An early introduction to STEAM education prepares students for an ever-changing world!

COMMUNITY OF FRIENDS

Founded by a retired GUSD school psychologist in 1995, Community of Friends unites schools, volunteers, and donors to provide meaningful holiday support—this year delivering nearly 100 gift-filled boxes to families in need across the district.

PAST INITIATIVES

GEF has supported our GUSD students, families, and schools since 1989 with a variety of different initiatives based on the current needs of the community. We are flexible so we can meet the changing needs of local students.
