Art has an unparalleled ability to transcend differences and connect individuals from diverse backgrounds, as seen at I Madonnari. For several years, the Goleta Education Foundation (GEF) has sponsored a square at the Santa Barbara I Madonnari Street Painting Festival to raise awareness for art education in elementary schools. I Madonnari, derived from the Italian word for “street painters,” is an annual three-day festival held on Memorial Day Weekend at the Old Mission Santa Barbara. Organized by the Children’s Creative Project (CCP), I Madonnari aims to promote art education as part of the holistic learning experience.
More specifically, CCP aims to foster artistic perception, creative expression, aesthetic valuing, understanding of the creative process, and cultural arts heritage among young people. The programs are designed to:
- Provide opportunities for creative expression, skill development, and joyful discovery in and after school
- Emphasize concentration, critical thinking, group cooperation, self-confidence, and positive self-esteem
- Address the “Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards for California Public Schools”

Artist: Blair Looker
Hear it from Blair!
Blair Looker, GEF Board Member and retired GUSD Art Teacher from Isla Vista Elementary School, created the chalk painting (see above) called “Puddle Dancing” during the Santa Barbara I Madonnari Street Painting Festival this past weekend. Blair shares the following sentiment.
Arts education is an essential component of developing the whole child. Effective arts education helps integrate the developing child in real-time and helps to build the skill, confidence, and drive needed for the creative expression of personal voice. Art in the classroom exposes our kids to the vastness of culture and promotes intangible qualities of joy and pleasure, which lift the spirit. My goal in the classroom was to have my students…happier and more relaxed than when they arrived.
Art is a powerful tool for self-expression, empowering individuals to explore and define their identities. Through art, students can assert their cultural heritage, values, and aspirations, fostering a sense of pride and belonging. It also helps broaden perspectives and deepen understanding as students collaborate.
At GEF, we believe in the transformative power of art and the importance of cultural expression in education. We invite students, educators, and art enthusiasts to join us at I Madonnari and experience the magic firsthand. Witness the breathtaking street paintings, engage in interactive workshops, and explore how art can enrich lives.
