Are you and your child ready for school? GUSD schools start one week from today on Wednesday, August 23! Tip #1: Practice independence

  • open lunch containers
  • put on and take off backpack
  • use the bathroom without help

Tip #2: Create a routine

  • start going to bed earlier and waking up at the appropriate time
  • walk around the school campus and familiarize yourself with the drop off/pick up area
  • attend your school’s meet the teacher event

Tip #3: Pack a comfort item

  • check with the school office or teacher to see what typs of items are allowed
  • pack a family photo
  • wear a special bracelet or bring a special keychain or sticker
  • put their favorite book in their backpack

Tip #4: Don’t linger

  • be on time for drop off
  • be positive when leaving (kids can sense your nervousness!)
  • don’t stay too long – check with the teacher or office ahead of time about the appropriate amount of time to stay

Tip #5: Stay engaged!

  • share information about your child, including allergies & behavioral issues
  • talk to your child about what they’re learning, their friends, and their feelings
  • volunteer
